Plain-language summary: BreakMate only collects what it needs to run: your name, school email, class schedule and the things you post in the app. We don't sell your data. You can ask us to delete your account and everything in it at any time.
Who we are
BreakMate is a campus app for students, operated from Montréal, Québec. Questions about your privacy or this policy can be sent to thebreakmate@gmail.com, which is also the contact for privacy requests under Québec's Law 25.
What we collect
- Account: your name, school email address, and a securely hashed password.
- Your campus: determined automatically from your school email domain.
- Schedule & classes: the classes and time slots you add, and enrollment in class groups.
- Social: friend connections, direct messages, plans and RSVPs, and class-group messages you send.
- Marketplace: listings you create, including photos and prices, and items you save.
- Profile: optional bio, program, avatar, and social handles you choose to add.
- Schedule scans: if you use the AI schedule scanner, the screenshot you upload is sent to our AI provider to extract your classes.
- Presence: a "last seen" timestamp so friends can see if you're around, subject to your privacy setting.
How we use it
We use your information only to run the app: to line up your free periods with friends, show classmates and campus events, deliver messages and notifications, power the marketplace, and keep your account secure. Campus statistics shown in the app are aggregated and anonymous.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers that help us operate the app, and only as needed: Anthropic (schedule-image parsing; not used to train models), our hosting and database providers, and the Expo push service if you enable notifications. We may also disclose information if required by law.
Your privacy controls
In the app you can set your presence to Friends, Classmates, or Ghost (nobody sees your status), edit or delete what you post, and remove marketplace listings. Marketplace and discovery are scoped to your own campus.
Retention & deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. Email us at thebreakmate@gmail.com to access, correct, or delete your account and associated data.
Security
Passwords are stored only as bcrypt hashes, connections use TLS, and access is limited to what's needed to run the service.
Students & age
BreakMate is intended for enrolled college and university students using a valid school email address.
Changes
If we update this policy, we'll change the date above and post the new version here.
